The Principality of Galicia-Volhynia
The Principality of Galicia-Volhynia (1199—1349) was the direct successor of Kyivan Rus in Ukrainian lands, preserving Rus statehood for a century and a half after the Mongol invasion. In 1199 Roman Mstyslavovych united the Galician and Volhynian principalities; his army reached as far as Kraków, but he was killed at the Battle of Zawichost in 1205. His sons Danylo and Vasylko regained the patrimony in 1238; Danylo withstood Mongol pressure and in 1253 received a royal crown from Pope Innocent IV at Drohiczyn, founding Kholm and Lviv. After the death of the last prince, Yuri II Boleslav, in 1340, Poland and Lithuania divided the lands.
