A1 Grammar

English sentence foundations, essential verb forms, and basic grammar structures.

1. Basic English Sentence Structure

In English the word order is the grammar: move the words and the meaning moves too.

2. Verb Be: Am, Is, Are

Ukrainian says "She a doctor" with no verb at all. English cannot manage without one.

3. Subject and Object Pronouns

The form of a pronoun depends not on the person but on its place in the sentence.

4. Possessive Adjectives, Pronouns, and ’s

Ukrainian has one word for "mine". English has two, and the choice depends on what follows.

5. Singular and Plural Nouns

There is one rule: add an s. All the difficulty sits in a dozen words you use every day.

6. Articles a, an and the

An article is what English says instead of "some" and "that same one".

7. Demonstratives this, that, these and those

Four words that point: what is near, what is far, one thing or several.

8. There is and there are

The way to say something exists when the listener does not know it yet. There here does not mean "over there".

9. Have got

The British way of saying "I have". The confusion starts only in the question.

10. Present Simple

A tense that is not about "now": it is about habits, timetables and what is true in general.

11. Present Continuous

An action you can see right now, and a temporary situation around this week.

12. Questions and Word Order

In an English question something always moves to the front. The whole trick is knowing what.

13. Can and Imperatives

A word that never changes: it needs no s, no to and no do.

14. Countable and Uncountable Nouns

Ukrainian counts advice happily. English does not count it at all.

15. Some, Any, Much and Many

Some or any is decided by the sentence; much or many is decided by the noun.

16. Basic Comparisons

To compare, a tail is added to the adjective. Two steps: more than one, and more than all.
