The National Liberation War of Bohdan Khmelnytsky
The National Liberation War of the Ukrainian people led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky (1648–1657) is one of the most important events in Ukrainian history. It led to the formation of the Cossack Hetmanate as an effectively independent state. The war began as an uprising of registered Cossacks and peasantry against Polish rule, grew into a large-scale struggle for statehood, and ended with the Pereyaslav Council and a reorientation toward alliance with the Tsardom of Muscovy.
