Two sentences, one word, and the listener takes something different from each.
I need a phone.
I need the phone.
An article is a small word with which English announces whether the listener knows what exactly is meant. Ukrainian does that job with intonation and word order, which is why articles feel unnecessary at first.
Three questions that settle everything
Choosing an article is not a list of exceptions but a short chain of questions. The first yes gives you the form.

We stayed in a hotel. The hotel was small.

And one rule above all: a singular countable noun is never left without a determiner. An article, my, this or something similar stands in front of it.
When the thing is the only one
The article the also appears when a thing is unique in the world or unique in this situation. Nothing needs explaining: there simply are no others.
the sun, the moon, the internet
the first page, the best result, the only chance
The mistakes everyone makes
The first is leaving a countable noun with no determiner.
I have cat. → I have a cat.
The second is putting the where the whole world is meant.
The children need sleep. → Children need sleep.
The third is choosing the article by the letter instead of the sound.
a hour → an hour
All three are caught by one question. Does my listener already know what I am talking about?

Describe your morning in English in two sentences: name some object for the first time in one, and come back to it in the other.
Then add a third sentence about that category of things in general. It should carry no article at all.
