These two verbs mean almost the same but behave differently.
She advised me to apply.
She advised me to apply.
She suggested that I apply.
The same, but suggest does not put a person before to.
She suggested me to apply.
This pattern does not exist.
The article explains the patterns of suggest and recommend, and the form without -s after demand, insist, suggest and recommend in a that clause.
Suggest and recommend
Suggest has three patterns, and none of them puts a person before to.
She suggested moving the meeting.
The -ing form.
She suggested that we move the meeting.
A whole that clause.
She suggested a new date.
Just a noun.
Recommend has the same three patterns. In formal British English recommend someone to do also occurs: The doctor recommended me to rest. Suggest has no such pattern at all.
To name the person something is suggested to, use to after suggest: She suggested a new plan to the team.
The form without -s after demand and insist
After verbs of demanding and advising, such as demand, insist, suggest, recommend, propose, request and require, a that clause often has the base form with no ending at all. It sounds formal, and it is the usual form in American English.
They demanded that he leave immediately.
Not leaves, although the subject is he.
She insisted that the report be rewritten.
Not is, but be.
The doctor recommended that she not drive for a week.
The negative: not before the verb, no doesn't.
British English often uses should instead: They demanded that he should leave. In conversation an ordinary tense also occurs: They demanded that he leaves.
Insist has two meanings. Insisted that he was innocent means he kept saying it was true. Insisted that he be present means demanded that he be there. The form without -s appears only in the second meaning.
Demand takes no person before to. People say They demanded that he leave or They demanded to see the manager, not They demanded him to leave.
Common mistakes
The first mistake is a person with to after suggest.
He suggested me to wait. → He suggested that I wait.
Suggest has no such pattern.
The second mistake is to after suggest.
She suggested to move the meeting. → She suggested moving the meeting.
Suggest is followed by -ing or that.
The third mistake is a person with to after demand.
They demanded him to leave. → They demanded that he leave.
Demand takes that, or to without a person.
All three mistakes show right after suggest or demand. A person with to cannot stand there. After suggest use -ing or that with a clause, and after demand that with a clause or to without a person, as in demanded to see the manager.
